Hospital day 5

Gideon is asleep. Marieke is with him, and I am now in the RMH. We have had a great day with many tough moments, but a Gideon who can and does more and more. Now we are getting to a point where we have to slow him down a bit because he wants more than he can already handle. But he is already feeling much better, especially since this afternoon, when he sat on our laps for the first time since the operation, what a pleasure. And he went out in the wheelchair, finally out of bed. Played with lego and made an aeroplane together. Took it easy and no awkward moments for a change. And we do get to start eating a bit. Liquid food first this week, to see if that goes well. Only after that some more solid food. But finally something in the mouth again. Half a danoon, 2 bites of yoghurt and a few sips of apple juice. And he really enjoys it, apart from the fact that it is not bread, which he really wants now.Just stood very briefly before going to bed. Bit shaky, but he dared to. How wonderful to be able to do more. And at the last minute, 8 bites of yoghurt. We are looking forward to tomorrow!

Gideons asleep. Marieke is with him, and I am now in the RonaldMcDonald home. We have a nice day behind us with a lot of tough moments, but Gideon is getting better and better. Now we come to a point where we have to slow him down a little because he wants more than he can handle. But he feels much better now, especially since this afternoon. This afternoon he he sat on our lap for the first time since the surgery. What a pleasure. And we have been out with a wheelchair briefly, finally out of bed. We played with Legos and pieced a plane together. We took it easy and had no further nasty moments for a change. And we started to do a little eating. For coming week only liquids, see if that goes well. After a week we can try more solid food. But finally something in the mouth. Two spoons of yogurt and a few sips of apple juice. And he enjoys it very much, apart from the fact that it is not bread, that's what he really wants now.Just before sleep he stood on his own for a moment. Little shaky, but he wanted to himself. How wonderful it is to be able to do more. And at the last minute already in bed he ate another 8 spoons of yogurt. We look forward to tomorrow!

It has been a hectic morning. The night went reasonably well. Lots of cramps because the bowels are going back to work. Those go a bit offline when morphine is in the body. And now that some nutrition was coming back in through the tube and the morphine was tapering off, he got quite bothered by it. Many moments I was awake and put my hand on his stomach (while lying in a bed next to it), but Gideon slept through reasonably well.Yesterday late in the afternoon we suddenly got word that a room was free in the RonaldMcDonald home. Fine! Marieke had a wonderful sleep last night. So this morning. Gideon slept through fairly long until half past seven. When we woke up, we did some washing. We sat up for the first time and played in bed with a bowl of water. The bed had to be changed anyway. Finally playing and being a 'kid' again. Yesterday there was talk of possibly removing the drain under an anaesthetic (not completely asleep). We asked whether other things could be done at that moment and not later when he is awake. Like infusions that were no longer used, all kinds of stickers and so on and the catheter. This morning after playing with water, the message suddenly came that they wanted to take the drain out early in the morning. So we made all preparations and went to the ward around 10am where they were going to remove the drain. He was given some medicine that made him sleepy and one last shot of painkiller over the epidural (on the back). The surgeon who operated on him then also removed the drain. And another doctor removed the drip in his foot, the bladder catheter, the epidural in his back and a lot of adhesives from his body. And the moment they finished, Gideon was also suddenly wide awake and not bothered by anything. So back in the room, Gideon suddenly has only 1 drip in his hand and the duodenum tube and gastro-catheter. Everything else is out and all morphine has also stopped completely. Feeding over the tube can now flow in a little faster (16ml p/h) to get the bowels working, and he can drink a little more (not eat yet). So Gideon asked for a cup of tea with bag and honey 🙂
He also got a lot of cards! We enjoyed looking at them over a cup of tea. And there we are. Suddenly Gideon is freed from a whole bunch of tubes and awkwardness and we are sitting next to him, somewhat bewildered. He is really doing very well, having undergone an incredible operation three days ago. Medically, they also think it's going really fast, but he's just doing really well. We may even be allowed to walk around the ward this afternoon, as Gideon wants that so much.We are so grateful and overwhelmed by God's goodness!

It's been a hectic morning. The night was reasonable. A bit colicky because the intestines get back to work. These go offline if there is morphine is in the body. Now that he got some food through the feeding tube and morphine reduced he got quite a bother from it. I've been awake many times and put my hand on his stomach (while I was lying next to a bed), but Gideon stayed asleep most of the time.Yesterday late afternoon we got a sudden notice that there was a room free in the RonaldMcDonald house. Nice! Marieke could sleep better this night. So this morning. Gideon slept reasonably long until mid 8am. When we woke up we did a quick wash. For the first time he sat up, and played with a basin of water in bed. The bed had to be changed also so no problem. Finally a moment playing and just beiing a 'child'. The docters discussed yesterday about the drain possibly could be taken out under sedation. We asked if they could concider if at that time they could do other things like IV's that were no longer used, and so all kinds of patches and the catheter. This morning, after playing with water suddenly the news came that they wanted to take out the drain at the start of the morning . So we made all preparations and went around 10.00am to the place where they were to remove the drain. He got some medication so he would be a bit drowsy, and one last shot analgesia on epidural (on the back). The surgeon who also operated on him, then removed the drain. And another doctor removed the IV in the foot, the bladder catheter, the epidural in the back and a lot of patches off his body. And the moment they where done Gideon was wide awake and was without any pain.Back in the room Gideon suddenly only had one IV (in the hand) and duodenal and gastro-catheter. The rest is out and all the morphine has completely stopped. Food on the probe can now catch up somewhat faster (16ml p/h) to get the guts to work, and he should just drink (not eat yet). So Gideon asked for a cup of tea with teabag and some honey 🙂 He has also received a lot of postcards! We are reading them while enjoying a cup of tea. Thank you!So here we are. Gideon delivered from a lot of tubes and we are sitting somewhat perplexed by his side. It is really going very well with him, given the fact that three days ago he had undergone an unbelievable operation. Medicaly they find he goes very fast, but it just goes very well with him. Maybe this afternoon we can even go for a walk about the ward, because that is what Gideon wants so badly. We are so grateful and overwhelmed by the goodness of God!
